November 2009

November was a busy month and it is hard to believe that I did not post for the whole month. This is a photo taken at the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Show held at Corse Gallery in Jacksonville, FL. It was a great show and I was elated to learn that my painting (Peeled Orange) has sold. I also sold a painting (Cloud Shadows) that was accepted into the Atlanta Artists Center Synchronicity Show as well as one that a collector had seen on my website.
The figurative piece to my right in the photo won the Silver Medal in the show. Judge C.W. Mundy commented that he was captivated by the way the artist handled painting the eyes. You can see what he was talking about even in this small photo.
I have either been busy or the weather has been uncooperative in allowing me to photograph my latest paintings. I painted 4 small paintings to enter into the Atlanta Artists Center Small Works Show as I found that the stock frames I had were too large even for my 6 x 8 paintings. The reception and Christmas party will be held at the Artists Center on Sunday, December 13 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.

October Painting

I just seemed to have so much going on in October that I did not get a lot of painting done. Here is the latest one. I was at the Smith Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw on October 24th for the inaugural Flavors of Fall. Sixteen artists were invited to show their work in the show. Although the weather was overcast and cold everyone had a good time and I got a chance to paint a small plein air painting. The gardens are just beautiful and it promises to be a great place to paint.

2009 Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Juried Exhibition

I was drinking my coffee and watching the news this morning and then realized that today was the day that acceptance notifications would be sent for the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Show. Connie and I turned on the computer and impatiently waited for it to boot up so we could get to the email. Sure enough there was an email but I had to go to Juried Art Services website to get the results. When I got to my entry page there was a green check mark beside my Peeled Orange entry. I was just overwhelmed. I am so honored to have been selected to display my work in this show.
I know I posted this painting in my April blog but I felt I should post it again.

The event was hosted by the National Park Service, the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau and artist Joan Hilliard. The Bank of North Georgia donated the prize money for the awards and Brown and Company donated a piece of jewelry for the first prize winner. Thanks to the event organizers who did such a fabulous job in it's first year. I look forward to the next one.
These are the two paintings that I entered. After the reception, the painting Chattahoochee Backwater was purchased by a collector from Cartersville.

Plein Air Fridays

Barn at Full Bloom Nursery 9 x 12 Oil

A group of fellow painters get together to paint plein air on Fridays quite often. This is a plein air that I did on a trip to a nursery near Clermont, GA. They have a pond full of the most beautiful lotus plants in full bloom. I painted a 6 x 8 of the lotus pond but wiped it off when I wasn't happy with the results. That happens now and then.
I am now represented by The Burton Gallery which is at Burton Dam Road and Highway 197, about 16 miles north of Clarkesville and 14 miles east of Helen. www.burtongalleryandemporium.com

Spring and Summer are Busy

This is a painting I did in Blue Ridge in April for their paint out. It is along the Toccoa River in the early morning of the first day of painting. I have painted several paintings along the river and it is such a nice place to paint. Unfortunately, some of the areas I used to paint are now off limits due to abuse from some unruly rafters.
I will have several paintings in the Bowen Center show "For Men Only" in Dawsonville. It will run from June 6 through the 27th. The reception for the show is on Saturday, June 6th from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
I will also have two paintings in the Quinlan Visual Arts Center 4th annual summer juried exhibition, "Local Color". This is a combined show with the art of Clayton Santiago and good friend Liefje Smith. The show will run from June 11th until August 9th. Come to the reception in Gainesville on Thursday, June 11th from 5:30 until 7:00 pm. Awards will be presented at 6:15.

Plein Air Outing

Last Friday, I met several other artists in Dahlonega for a day of painting and a fine lunch. Here is a small 9 x 12 study that I painted before lunch. It is now on display in a plein air show at the Cannery Art Center in Dahlonega. The show will run through July 12th.
I also received word that both of my paintings submitted to the annual juried show titled "Local Color" at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville have been accepted. Those paintings are the cat in the chair and the peeled orange painting. The show will run from June 11th through August 9th. Plan to attend the opening reception on June 11th. This is always a wonderful show.

John Poon Workshop

I have been busy trying to prepare a slide show presentation for an Artists Bootcamp at the Atlanta Artists Center on Saturday, March 28. I have also been working on getting a portfolio together to present to a gallery tomorrow so I have not been doing a lot of painting. I did paint a couple of plein air pieces last week when we took a trip to Albany.
Next week is going to be a busy week. I am taking a second workshop with John Poon. I did a workshop with him last October and he was such a wonderful instructor that everyone who attended wanted to get him back. That will be from Monday through Friday and then I am painting in a plein air paint out in Blue Ridge on Saturday and Sunday.
I should have a lot of paintings to add to the blog after I get back.

Margarita

This painting is in the March show at the Atlanta Artists Center. It is one of a series of still lives I painted in December and January when it was too cold to get outdoors. It was set up and painted from life.

Roscoe

Well, finally it got warm and dry enough to photograph some of the new pieces painted in the last week or two.
This little cow painting was a real blast to paint. His name is Roscoe. Hope you like him too.

Welcome

This cat was napping on the front porch of a house where we were painting during a workshop. I just loved the texture of the fur against the wicker and the complimentary colors of the orange againt the blue.
