Booth Western Art Museum

Chuck Wagon Cookoff 18 x 24 Oil

This is a painting that I painted to enter in the members show at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. It was painted from a series of photos that I took at the Museum when they had their 7th Southeastern Cowboy Gathering in March. They had several teams competing to see who had the best chuck wagon food. There was a wealth of colorful characters dressed in period clothing and so many really great things attached to the chuck wagons. The Booth is a wonderful museum and it is my favorite place to get the creative juices going.

Birds Nest Invitational

Containers - 8 x 10 Oil on Linen Panel

Bird's Nest Invitational
This is a painting that was accepted into the Bird's Nest Invitational at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. This is a special Spring exhibition with proceeds benefiting Elachee Nature Science Center. The show was inspired by artist (and juror) Roseta Santiago’s recent series of bird’s nest paintings and the feelings evoked by this powerful symbol of security and comfort. The show will be hanging until May 30, 2010.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens
I have 22 paintings in the Hiram Butler House in the Smith-Gilbert Gardens for the month of April. The gardens are located at 2382 Pine Mountain Road, Kennesaw, GA 30152. There will be an artists reception on April 24, from 1:00 until 3:00 at the gardens. Everyone is invited to the reception and come early and see the beautiful gardens.

Burton Gallery Plein Air Show
I will be leaving immediately after the reception at the Smith-Gilbert Gardens to attend the opening reception at The Burton Gallery and Emporium for "Impressions of the Sautee Valley". The reception will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 pm. Light fare will be prepared by the Stovall House, who sponsored this first of four seasonal plein air shows. This show contains paintings done in the winter of the area around the Sautee Valley. Burton Gallery is located at 150 Burton Dam Road, Clarkesville, Georgia 30523  not far from Batesville, Ga.

Still Life Paintings

Lemon Trio 8 x 10 Oil

This is one of a series of fruit and vegetable still life paintings that I painted for Corse Gallery in Jacksonville, Florida over the last couple of months. I finally added retouch varnish, framed and shipped them this week. I will be a guest artist in their gallery for the next several months. Painting these small still life paintings has been a lot of fun and they will become a greater portion of my output this year. I am now painting some larger ones while the weather is not conducive to plein air painting. April and May are pretty full with several plein air paint outs.

Painting Still Life's

Pear Trio 8 x 10 on Linen Panel

This is one of the still life's that I will be sending to Jacksonville as soon as I get them all sprayed with retouch varnish and packed. I have painted ten of them since December. All were painted from life and have been a lot of fun. I am struggling with a large landscape right now and am painting it from a photo. I have the plein air piece and need to go back to it and forget the photo. I find it much easier to paint from life than a photo.

Another Still Life

Pomegranite and Pear with Black Vase 12 x 12 Oil

This is the second painting accepted into the AAC Winners Circle Show. It was one I painted for the Small Works Show in December that didn't make it. Two of those rejected in December were selected for the Winners Circle in January and one of them was sold. It just goes to show that acceptances and awards in shows are all at the mercy of a particular judge. It is important not to let a rejection in a show be too discouraging. Three rejections should prompt a closer look. Get a critique from an artist friend you respect.

Still Life Paintings

Pomegranite and Pears 10 x 10

I have been doing quite a few still life's lately. Here is one that I entered into the Winner's Circle Show at the Atlanta Artists Center. In order to be in the show you had to have won an award in 2009 in one of the monthly shows. This is one of the two pieces I had accepted and I'm thrilled that it sold to a lady that came into the gallery browsing and saw it. She purchased it before the show had even been hung. What a nice surprise.

New Years Resolutions

Dahlonega in October 8 x 10 Oil

I want to make a New Years Resolution to update this blog more often. I was able to get some decent photos of quite a bit of work this morning. It has been a battle to keep the glare off the paintings when photographing them. I seem to have found a solution finally.
This painting is one that I did just outside of Dahlonega in October. I found this spot in the Spring and made a note that I needed to come back in the Fall. I was not disappointed.
I have been painting still lifes lately and will post some of them soon. With the temperature being so cold, it is a good thing to keep you busy when you can't paint out.
